KidzBlitz
KidzBlitz is a volunteer- and peer
support-based initiative with the goal
of decreasing the number of children who
are eligible for public health care
programs, such as Medicaid and the Child
Health Plan Plus (CHP+).Our volunteers
work directly with families to help them
navigate through the application process
for Medicaid and CHP+, including
assisting families to secure required
documentation, schedule application
assistance appointments, and facilitate
translation services.
In Colorado, there are approximately
180,000 uninsured children, close to
100,000 of whom are eligible for
Medicaid or CHP+. Eligibility for these
programs is determined by two basic
qualifications: 1) Families must have an
income that is less than 205% of the
Federal Poverty Level, $43,464 for a
family of four in 2008 (VIEW
INCOME CHART);
and 2) Children applying for coverage
must be US Citizens or legal permanent
residents with appropriate
documentation.
In May 2008, KidzBlitz released its
first annual report, entitled
“Breaking Barriers: Analysis and
Recommendations to Improve Family
Experiences with Public Health Care
Programs in Colorado".
The report was a result of volunteer,
staff, and family experiences in
KidzBlitz’s first year of operations,
and examined the challenges families
face as they apply for Medicaid and
CHP+. “Breaking Barriers” places the
primary problems encountered by
volunteers and families into four
categories: Application Assistance;
Outreach Education & Training;
Procedural Complexities; and Language,
Culture & Immigration. Each of these
categories is accompanied by realistic
recommendations for the public health
care community designed to simplify
procedures and improve family
experiences.
